Construction finished in 1936, with the base used mainly for training of pilot, gunners and radio operators. In 1942, concrete runways and taxiways were built by Russian and French prisoners of war. In 1943, night fighters arrived at the base. In September 1944, Me262 jet fighter training was at the base. First bombed in February of 1945, it was repeated hit for the rest of the war, causing heavy damage. US forces occupied the field 27 April 1945, after the retreating Germans blew up aircraft and damaged the facilities.
