The airport Varrelbusch was created in 1939 as a landing ground. In 1942, it got a paved runway. During the war, mostly combat units stationed with Heinkel He 111 and Junkers Ju 88 bombers were stationed here. In 1945 the station had Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters. After the war, the site demilitarized and in 1951, the runways were demolished. Today, the military uses it as a training area.
