Zweigwerk Halberstadt - Halberstadt, Germany

Target Category: Industry - Aviation
The Zweigwerk Halberstadt, established in 1934 by Junkers Flugzeugwerke, produced wings for the Ju88 aircraft. With a workforce of 8100 people it was the second largest Junkers facility after Dessau. In late 1944, production was moved into caves south of Halberstadt due to bombing. A larger facility had been planned at Langenstein-Zwieberge. 5000 Buchenwald prisoners built a 17km long cave system for the production of jet engines. Construction ended with the end of the war. After the war, Maschinenbau Halberstadt GmbH used the former Junkers Flugzeugwerke facilities.
