Originally established in 1933 as the Hamburger Flugzeugbau GmbH (HFB), the aircraft manufacturer was an division of the Blohm and Voss shipyards. The final assembly plant with an airfield was built in 1937 in Wenzendorf, ten miles southwest of Hamburg. Among the many types of aircraft built here were the Junkers Ju 88, Messerschmitt Me 109, 110, 210 and 262. Glide bombs were also assembled here. Production ceased following the bombing raid of 31 December 1944. British troops took the area 18 April 1945. After the war all usable machines were dismantled and taken to England as war reparations. Today, a part of the airfield used by a gliding club. A retirement home occupies several of the remaining factory buildings.
